In the Rapid Play Alan Hiatt won against Bill Hardwick, John Lydon had 2 wins against Alan Hiatt. Alan, James and John are joint tournament leaders with 6 points each.

Leo Woning won a rated friendly against James Ovens.

Tonight we welcomed Leo Voner to the club. He hope to make regular appearances, and tonight he had an interesting game with Tom Scott. Tom eventually coming out on top.

The Club Championship got under way with a win for John Lydon against Bill Hardwick.

In the Rapid Play Alan Hiatt and James Ovens played their 2 games against each other. One win each.

Eden Cup

Today we played Penrith in the Eden Cup. The match was played in the iconic location of Carlisle Castle.

The match went to the very last second. John Lydon needed to win against Lewis McAtear to draw the match, but lost on time with Lewis having about 2 minutes left.

Hopefully there will soon be some press coverage of this event and the season as a whole.

No competitive games were played tonight, but John Kelly was presented with the Club Championship Trophy. Congratulations to John.

Congratulations to John Kelly on the birth of his daughter Cassandra.

In the Club Championship Alan Hiatt eventually won a very close game against Chloe Cooper.

In the Rapid Play James Ovens and Jacek Magrowski played each other twice and both won one of the games.

Four games were played in the Rapid Play. Ian Mackay won 2 of them, both against Bobby Clay. Paul Birks won the other 2, both against James Ovens. Ian Mackay leads the tournament, having won all 12 of his games.

We were pleased to see George Glover return to the club and wish hime the very best in his recovery from illness.

Very best of luck to all Carlisle players who are competing in the South Lakes Congress this weekend.

It was a fairly quiet night with just one competitive game being played. That was a very close game in which John Kelly eventually prevailed against Chloe Cooper.

The Eden Cup match against Penrith is now scheduled to take place in Carlisle Castle on 05/06/2025.

It was the funeral of Alan Little this morning. Alan was a great personality and long time member of Carlisle Chess Club and he will be sorely missed. Condolences and best wishes to Alan’s family.

Alan Hiatt won the Knock Out Cup final against John Lydon to become this season’s Knock Out Cup Champion.

Congratulations and well done to Alan.

There were also 2 games played between Bobby Clay and James Ovens in the Rapid Play. That resulted in a win for each player

One game was played in the Club Championship, which resulted in a win for John Kelly against Jacek Majewski. John Leads the tournament.

Alan Hiatt and James Ovens played both of their Rapid Play games, both of them winning 1 game. Ian Mackay still leads this tournament.

Next week will be the Knock Out Cup Final between Alan Hiatt and John Lydon

It is with the greatest of sadness, that we received the terrible news of Alan Little passing away. Alan has been a huge part of Carlisle Chess Club for many years and he will be sorely missed.

Our deepest sympathy and condolences to Alan’s family.

The evening was very subdued due to the sad news, Only 2 Rapid play games were played. Ian Mackay won both of them against James Ovens.

The 2nd Knock Out Cup semi final was played tonight. It was a very tough game between John Lydon and Bill Burgess which was eventually won by John. John will play Alan Hiatt in the final.

In the Club Championship Jacek Majewski won against Bill Hardwick and Bobby Clay won against James Ovens.

In the Rapid Play Alan Hiatt had 2 wins, both against Bob Foster.

It was Carlisle 1 v Carlisle 2 in the final of the Whitaker Cup

Carlisle chess teams face off in Whitaker Cup final

Ian Mackay and John Lydon won their games against Paul Rivers and Alan Hiatt respectively for Carlisle 1. Johnny Robson and Bill Burgess won against James Ovens and Bill Hardwick to make the score 2 – 2, but the handicap meant that Carlisle 1 were the winners and now holders of the Whitaker Cup.

As well as being part of the winning Whitaker Cup team, Ian Mackay won the Cumbria Under 1700 tournament at the weekend. Two county tournament wins in 5 days. Well done Ian !!

One game was also played in the Club Championship, that was a win for Nathan Rothwell against Chloe Cooper.

Alan Hiatt won his semi final against Paul River in the Knock Out Cup to become the first finalist. He will play Bill Burgess or John Lydon in the final.

In the Club Championship John Kelly and Bill Burgess drew their game and James Ovens won against Chloe Cooper.

In the Rapid Play Bob Foster and Alan Played 2 games against each other, winning 1 each.

The Whitaker Cup Final date is now definite and will be the 10/04/2025.

Yet another good and busy night.

In the Club Championship Paul Rivers won against Chloe Cooper, and John Kelly won against James Ovens. John’s win makes him the tournament leader.

In the Rapid Play, Ian Mackay had 4 wins, 2 against Bill Hardwick and 2 against John Lydon. Bill Hardwick had a win against Bobby Clay. John Lydon won against James Ovens. The game between Alan Hiatt and Bobby Clay was a draw. Ian is leading the tournament.

Another good night. We welcomed Joe (A friend of Nathan) and Tom Scott to the club.

The remaining 3 Knock Out Cup quarter finals were played resulting in Alan Hiatt winning against Nathan Rothwell and Paul Rivers winning against Alan Little. Ian Mackay and John Lydon drew their game, but John progresses to the semi final and he was lower rated than Ian. Bill Burgess is the other semi finalist.

The semi final finals will be Paul Rivers v Alan Hiatt and Bill Burgess v John Lydon.

In the Club Championship John Kelly won against Bill Hardwick. John Kelly is now the joint leader with Bill Burgess.

It was another good night attendance wise with 2 competitive games being played and Konrad Langowski joining the club.

In the Knock Out Cup Bill Burgess won his quarter final game against Johnny Robson and he will meet Ian Mackay or John Lydon in the semi final.

We welcomed George Glover back to the club following his recent illness. Great to see him back and hoping that his recovery sees him go from strength to strength.

It was another good night with 16 people in attendance.

In the Knock Out Cup Alan Hiatt and John Lydon progressed to the next round with wins against Bob Foster and Jacek Majewski respectively.

In the Club Championship James Ovens won against Bill Burgess.

In the Rapid Play Ian Mackay had 2 wins against Alan Little.

Ian Mackay opened his account in the Rapid Play with 2 wins against Alan Hiatt. Alan Little also had a Rapid Play win against Nathan Rothwell.

We welcomed 2 new players, Cristoffe and his son Conrad.

A Blitz tournament was held tonight. Ian Mackay won the tournament with a perfect 5 wins from 5 games. Alan Hiatt and Paul Rivers came joint second with 4 points each.

The draw was made for the Knock Out Cup.

Most importantly, a vote was taken and a decision made to adopt the Eden Education Office as the new venue for the chess club and to revert to having Thursday night as the club night starting next Thursday at 19:30.

The club had it’s first session of the year tonight.

We welcomed Sarah and Liam as new members.

The turnout was on the low side, possibly due to the very cold weather and no competitive games were played.

It was a very quiet night at the club because Ian Mackay, James Ovens, Bill Hardwick and John Lydon were all playing at Penrith in a Whitaker Cup match against Ulverston. They won 4 -0 and join the other Carlisle team in the semi final draw.

Possibly due to the bad weather, only Alan Little and Matt Wardle came to the club.

We welcomed Johnny Robson (Last season’s under 18 Cumbria Champion) to the club.

In the only competitive game George Glover won against Alan Little in the Club Championship.

It was a quiet night tonight with just a couple of rapid play games taking place which resulted in wins for Bill Hardwick against Alan Little and James Ovens, but James still remains the tournament leader.

It was decided to change the club night to Wednesdays starting from next week.

The first proper club night of the season took place, but without any competitive games being played.

We welcomed a new player, Paul Birks to the club.

Earlier in the day we received disappointing news, that we would have to leave our current venue. We are now searching for an alternative.
